Altars have been a part of society since Biblical times. Growing up Catholic, the altars at churches I went to were elaborately decorated and could easily cost a lot of money just to build them. Now that I have become more spiritual and not tied to any one organized religion anymore, I have dreamed of having my own when I chanced upon the book “Altars: Bringing Sacred Shrines into Everyday Life” by Denise Linn. Drawn by the big angel figurine used as its cover, I’m keen to find a similar one. But at the moment, I found a big canvas cloth with the angel design on it that I let it hang on a huge wall at my house.
Below is a pic of my own altar. It’s still a work in progress as I plan on adding more symbols of what I want to have in my life. The ultimate goal is to have an entire room as an altar, full of the symbols of spirituality, wealth and happiness collected from travels or even from Internet purchases.
Here are the reasons why you need to have your own sanctuary.
1.) We are not in this world to navigate it alone. There’s Somebody Up There who’s willing to help guide you towards your true light. All you have to do is ask. Be open to talking to Him or Her and accept suggestions through various ways.
2.) It helps you get in tune with or tap into your intuition through meditation.
3.) Peace of mind and calmness are attained through daily prayer and meditation.
4.) Many people advised about focusing on the present moment and savoring it. Having an altar is one of the ways to do that.
5.) Once you get into the habit of praying and meditating daily, it’s easier to do it even on busy days. Even a quick prayer of gratitude will do.
